Are you doing cornices only at this point, Wendy? (where you don't need yards and yards?) If so...
You may find readymade panels, designer fabric shower curtains, (JC Penny, Bed Bath&Beyond, TJ Maxx,etc.) that appeal to you and may provide enough material to work with, without breaking the budget.
I once used a lively Marimekko tablecloth to make a cornice and matching roller shade. In one house, I used table napkins, overlapped on the diagonal, for a cornice in the kitchen, with a matching table runner for the table and then stuffed matching fabric placemats to serve as lumbar pillows on the kitchen chairs. They were comfortable too!
Half the fun for me is thinking 'outside the box'. I hope you really enjoy your project! Maybe we can persuade you to post photos when you are done!
