That's not quite true. The Electoral College was instituted to blunt the impact of the most populace states in deciding the outcome to the detriment of the smaller state's concerns.
Also it was feared a "tyrant" could manipulate public opinion in order to come into power and so the Electoral College, which would meet only once would be insulated from manipulation by foreign governments or others.
