Ants, and bugs got in anyway before the repair. You can't keep ants out unless you lay down poison. Nothing such as a lizard can crawl in with a 1/16" gap. Make the gap whatever you like. The smaller the slower the water will run out but come to think of it what's the rush as long as it doesn't puddle.. I used a very large plastic wire tie, cut to the width of the frame. Smaller wireties that would be thinner would work also and wouldn't rust or corrode. Any gap will let the water run out and the smaller the better for bugs, but you'll never eliminate all bugs.
