BostonCelt, for your photo, try clicking on User CP on the far left of the screen, click on settings, click on edit avatar and choose which photo you want for your avatar. Hopefully that will work for you.
Good idea about hocking family members to get to TV. Since I don't have kids or grandkids I'm thinking of hocking my 3 nieces...
