It was scary to realize how easy it was to get in through the sliders even when they were locked. We don't feel an alarm system is necessary, but we do lock our doors when we leave and at night. I saw a bar that goes across the sliding door but it looked too obtrusive to the view for me so we opted for a good thick stop stick. We are in a CYV so our great neighbours are always on the lookout for unusual behaviour around the 'hood.

One of the suggestions offered by the Sheriff's Office (Sumter) is to place a dowel in the track above the sliding door. The dowel will ride on the top when the door is opening or closing, but it is impossible for the door to be lifted out. He showed us that with a bar in the lower track the slider could still be lifted out even though it would not move (slide). He had numerous other suggestions as well and the inspection is free. You just have to call and set up an appointment for them to come out.
