Now some people might say he was being cautious .
I cant be that charitable .
Logically - lets think about this - if he couldnt tell if the lump was positive or benign without previous mamograms - WHY - did he order mammograms/xrays and an ultra sound ???? Why didnt he just ask for any previous mammograms before the bill for all this work became ridiculous .
Needles to say I asked for my xrays and will never return to Lake Imaging again.
Mary , a good health care providor would have/should have told you what to expect before you had your surgery . If you are still experiencing discomfort I would go to another radliogist for a 2nd opinion . Good luck Mary.

According to what the original poster wrote she didn't have surgery, she had a needle biopsy. A surgical biopsy is an incision and removal of tissue and for that you are sedated.
I am surprised you weren't first required to get your old mammogram films,
Maybe it is because you told them you felt a lump. The x rays and ultra sound are exactly what should happen with any palpable lump. I am sure that they would have asked you sign a request for your old films to be released and sent to Lake Imaging at that time. If you had not ever had a mammogram, then surgical removal of tissue would be needed before a valid diagnosis. And even when you have your old mammogram, new mammogram and needle biopsy or surgical biopsy, you would probably need a ct scan too of both breasts before cancer was ruled out.
Our daughter and I recently went to Lake Imaging here in The Villages (We have had many yearly before in Cincinnati) and we had to first request our old mammograms and hand carry them in so that we could have a mammogram here at Lake Imaging. The radiologist did an exam at that time and we were told that we were clear again. We both have had breast cancer. We both found the procedures were just what we were used to in Cincinnati and found the radiologist to be very nice.
Please be sure to get your last mammogram. You will need to send a letter to the place where your mammograms were last done and give them your name, date of birth and your new address and they will then send them to you without charge, you can't ask for them sent over the phone, they must receive a signed written request either from you directly or from the medical facility.. Please take those xrays to another radiologist. Early detection saves lives.
But perhaps the old mammograms were sent to Lake Imaging and then they made the diagnosis that your lump was benign since you didn't mention what happened when you went to a new place.
They weren't trying to make money on you. They were doing what should have been done.
Kindest wishes and hopes that you are o.k.,
AND many hugs.
