You must be sure the valve isn't soldered to the supply line/pipe before putting a wrench on that thing. Mine was therefore I twisted my valve off along with the supply pipe. Had to run new piping to fix the thing.

Even if it is a threaded male fitting going into the valve, you must still back up that supply line/pipe with a wrench before applying torque.
