I always tried to get to know my daughter's friends before deciding who she could/couldn't hang out with. Just the way I was raised and the way I tried to raise my daughter.
As far as tattoos, I just don't see a woman with a pretty flower, mermaid, heart tattoo, etc. as "trashy." I have seen some terrible tattoos, but try to judge the tattoo and not the person.
