The instructions you quote are to add network storage in the form of a USB storage device, whether it is a thumb drive or USB connected hard drive. These are different from connecting your computer and router.
The steps are usually to connect the router directly to a computer using a network cable. (Some newer routers let you do this wirelessly.)Then access the routers setup page using a web browser and the router's IP address. That is where you set up your SSID, password, and security for your home network. (Routers usually come with a default SSID and password that should be changed to secure your network.) Once that is done, disconnect the computer from the router and set up your wireless connection on the computer to match the security and password settings you entered into the router. That should get you connected to your new network.
Z's advice to not broadcast your SSID is a good one. Some people leave it on so that they can add another computer to the network by searching for their SSID and entering the password to get connected. But it also allows others to see your network with their computers and, if your security is weak, perhaps connect to your network and use up your bandwidth at least, if not send your malware at worst.
