Get a copy of "McCarthy's Bar" by Peter McCarthy. A best seller in Ireland a few years ago and a great intro to Irish humor and Irish people, and one of the funniest books you'll ever read. A must read for anyone going to Ireland for the first time. If you don't get to read it until after you return, that's okay 'cause it's a must read for anyone who's been to Ireland.

If you're going to be driving a rental, get all the insurance you can....and know you'll never EVER complain about drivers in TV again....

Don't spend all your time hitting all the typical tourist sites. Go off the beaten path and know the actual Irish are probably now outnumbered....
