I would have to guess this is another rumor. Some of the worst repeaters of inaccurate information are some of the folks who work on building houses.
They used Sherwin Williams on our new house.
The developers have great buying power, I would imagine when they need something they send a request for price and have pretty high criteria for the quality.They obviously use a lot of paint for both interior and exterior. Manufacturers would have to meet their standards and would bend over backwards to do so because they would be selling a huge amount of paint.
I would think that they get a lot of bang for their buck without any need for kickback.
And just an aside from someone who is an avid watcher of HGTV, Flat paint is now "in" in the fashion sense and you don't see anything in new homes with a glossy or semi glossy finish.
