I also do it subconsciously. But I think I have figured it out. When I drive the car I notice that my left knee rests against the car door. Now that there is no clutch to press or dimmer switch to step on, the left leg just kind of sits there and does nothing.

Since there is no door in a golf cart to lean against, it hangs out.
