Default cockatiels

Cockatiels are parrots, and they need to be socialized. We've had one for six years. With two, they may have bonded to each other and not need so much social interaction with people, but you should not adopt them if you don't plan to spend some time with them. They are delightful birds but need some interaction with people. All parrots do, for that matter.

Our Cockatiel came to us as a baby, when our first golden was very old. The bird, Isa, was a non-event for Bear, our dog. Bear passed on, and we got Crosby, a golden puppy. Isa was by that time totally not afraid of dogs, but Crosby the puppy thought Isa might be a wonderful chew toy. It took me two weeks to train it out of him, bringing the bird near and saying to the puppy, "Leave it," or "NO!" and rewarding him with treats. He was only 10 weeks old at the time, but it was a pretty easy process. Now Isa is a non-event with Crosby. The other day Isa was startled and jumped out of his cage (door was open) and landed on the snoozing Crosby's face. Crosby opened one eye and signed. Isa, of course, told Crosby it was all his fault! (The males do have an attitude! But we like that.)

I wonder if you have tried any kind of training regime with your adopted dog? It might be worth a couple weeks' try. Just sayin'... You know your dog best, though.
