Americans love their tests but hate the cost of the medical system. The tide seems to have gone out on the utility of the PSA as a routine screening test. It leads according to the experts to more harm than good resulting in patients being biopsied and treated for a disease that is less likely to hurt them than the treatment. There are exceptions to the recommendation not to test. If you have a strong positive family history or you are in a higher risk group (African American) then the risk benefit ratio may favor testing.
