A twosome is playing ahead of a foursome. The twosome drops something and retreats, likely briefly to try to find it. Apparently if it had been a golf club the OP would not have felt it inappropriate to retreat. And this is the terrible violation of ready play?
Ok, you waited an extra 2 to 3 minutes for the massive tee hunt. I'll bet by two more holes a twosome is well ahead of you. There was no complaint that this twosome was new to golf or needed lessons or on a course that was above their level of skill. Nor does OP say that the twosome was chronically slow. Just that they lost an item they hoped to retrieve. What is so serious about it that is would warrant a "this takes the cake"? I like cake especially chocolate.
