Back in Mass. a few years ago I was called for jury duty. They gathered us in a waiting room before selection began and an officer came up to the podium to give some initial instruction. He then said:
“If any of you are holding a letter from your boss requesting that you be relieved from serving because you are so valuable to the operation of the company that they cannot be without you for a single day, please put it back in your pocket but don’t throw it away. When your next annual review comes up, you can hand it back to him as a reminder.”
