The same thing was touted when HMO's first were introduced here. It was said that we would never see the same doctor twice, the care would be cursory, and it would take days to get an appointment, and that all treatments would have to go through panels and would be very hard to see a specialist.
I opted for Kaiser Permanente and stayed with them for over 20 years before moving to The Villages where they are not an option. I never had a problem getting an appointment, had the same doctor for several years, excellent care, never denied a specialist or treatment, and had great customer care.
The point is: Do not believe what you have heard until you try it yourself. It just might be the best thing you have had - like Kaiser was for me.
