If you read the article in Politico, you will see that this is a decision made by the Secret Service, not President Obama. The policy, as is explained in the article, is when the president is seated at the dais, as he is at the White House Correspondents Dinner, these restrictions do not apply. However, when the president is mingling with the crowd, no utensils are allowed. How can a secret service agent distinguish a real knife from an eating utensil from a few feet away?
