I am so sorry that is was deeper than it looked. And glad they were not sinkholes. I am sorry that I incorrectly reported what happened, but sorrier that you have had this very unfortunate situation occur in your yard. I hope it will be completely remedied soon.
You are right about this site being a good one to start rumors. This time I am at fault and I am very sorry to have worried anyone.
