If you want to install a modem in the Comcast network - whether it is yours or theirs - you have to contact Comcast so that they can verify the connection. When I was renting from Comcast, I would go down every six months or so and get a replacement. I always had to contact Comcast so they could finalize the setup. It is not a plug and play setup. They need to know you are a Comcast customer.
