The PUR faucet filter has a little switch to allow you to turn it off or on. You can use tap water for whatever you want, turn the knob/switch/handle to get as much filtered water as you want. It is faster and easier than a pitcher style. It also has a monitor light that is green when the filter is good, and flashes yellow when you are near the end of your filter's life. Change it and back to green. They say to NOT run the hot water through it. The filter is much easier to change than most fridge filters, and probably a lot less $$.
We have used this style for several years and in 3 weeks, when we move in, we will use it again with a whole house water softener.
