Portman would probably be safe, but not a game-changer. I strongly disagree that Palin helped Jmac get more votes. The tea partiers would have voted for joe the plumber over Obama, and independents largely were turned off by Palin. As for Christie, he is refreshingly candid, smart, and funny, however he is a loose cannon who could create a fatal, you-tube fiasco any time he is off-message. I like Christie and would prefer having beers with him over any other politician I can think of, but Richie is right, not ready, and I am not sure he can ever change who he is.
