I have traveled many times with cats. If I drive to our condo in St. Augustine, the cats go with us!
I've made the trips with my late purebred cats (Birmans) between northern Virginia and Michigan and northern Virginia and Florida. And, I now travel with my two cats that were abandoned between Michigan and Florida.
They have all traveled well and I have never sedated them. Mom and I now travel in a van so it might be a little easier. I have a 24" cage that we put on the seat behind the driver and a smaller cage if they want to be alone. Mom also lets them out of the cages for a while. They know they can't go near the driver! We put a small litter box behind the driver's seat and give them food and water when we make any pit stops!
One reason why I thought I had such good luck traveling with cats is that I started taking them for short rides when they were small -- and not just to the vet! Two of my cats visited nursing home residents on a regular basis.
If you are spending the night at a motel on the way to TV, you might want to check out "pet friendly hotels" in advance.
