The snap kit comes with a set of tools or metal forms that with the help of a hammer and a hard surface, you assemble and align the two pieces together with the canvas inbetween thru the hole in the canvas and tap them so they attach together. They sell an attachment tool in the form of a set of pliers which will make the job easier.

I bought the kit at Lowe's several weeks ago. I have two broken snaps located on the straps that hod the panel once it is rolled up. My problem has been to have a lack of hands to hold, a hard surface in which to hammer on while holding the tools hammr and snaps. so far i have failed at it and realized that I would have to remove the panel from the car lay it down on a hard surface. however i left for a month and just getting back to the repair.
I was looking for the clap type my repair guy has but can't find one
