This practice has been going on since I can remember (50 yrs or so ). Its called upselling and its just part of a way for auto places to make some extra money. Being a dealer tech for the better part of 40 yrs, I too have been guilty of upselling. The best thing you can do is to be an educated consumer and do your research as you have indicated. Now that I have been out of the business I still get told I need things on my cars, they just dont know I was doing the same thing before they were born. Dont try and BS a BSer.
