Default Stretching carpet question

It cost me 600 to clean and stretch and I even had a bleach spot that they fixed for me. Stretching is guaranteed for 6 years. I figured if I get 3-4 years out of it I could then decide if I wanted wood or tile.
This is a question regarding stretching carpeting -- I need to replace my carpet in my house up north - the carpet is 16+ yrs. old. Because of unexpected dental expenditures, my plan to replace the carpeting this year may not happen. Is carpet stretching only done in Florida as I have never heard anyone stretching their carpeting up north here in the Chicago area? Thanks in advance.
