I just finished upgrading and replacing mine in our VA home. Hindsight being twenty twenty, I would have removed it and patched all the holes. First, Nutone is no longer in business so a one for one replacement is not possible. I bought an M&S system with a master station and CD player. I have the master and 16 room units. They had them everywhere. Two in the garage, three in the basement, porch, shed, and every bedroom and bathroom.

So because so many units it was expensive. About $2000. I have nothing but issues with every aspect of the system. Have returned the base station for warranty work once and am getting ready to ship the CD player back. Both have failed. Have had to replace two speaker units as they failed. This was supposed to be the best quality replacement system available, but I think it is very poor quality.

I used to install these systems many years ago and thought replacing it would be fairly simple. It is not. The original antenna systems will not support the new system so had to rewire that all the way to the attic. (3 stories) The speaker units only come in one size with a adapter plate to cover the original hole. However the original unit had 4 large 12 X 14 units. Nothing available for those, so had to patch more holes. The outside door units are a different size so had to remove and patch siding.

So if doing it again, I wouldn't. I would remove the old unit and patch all the holes.
