You are right about tidal surges, but don't get too comfortable about being inland to protect us from wind. The furthest coast is the east about 80 miles. When hurricane Whelma hit us on the east coast in S. Fla. it came ashore on the west coast 160 miles away. It gained strength and clobbered us on the east coast. It was large enough that it extended over the gulf and Atlantic and was able to intensify. We in TV are in the narrowest part of the state and a large hurricane could do the same thing. We seem to be in a zone for some reason that storms seem to pass us but there is always a chance someday for a powerful storm to enter either coast and hit us. By the way, winds in a cat 5 hurricane rival the most powerful tornados, only cover a much larger area.
