Geewiz -- I have visited TV four times -- felt very safe there as a single woman. My friend has lived full time in TV for just over a year now, and she also feels very safe there.
Car rental -- I believe Enterprise a has car rental place in TV if you just want to rent a car for a few days or a week to get "off campus". There is Villages Transportation shuttle service (don't know the exact name, but I'm sure a TV resident knows the correct name) that offers shuttle service back and forth from Orlando International Airport.
I rented last year in October and will be back in October for another visit. Last year the weather was unexpectedly cool for a couple of days -- I needed a jacket LOL. But many people say October is one of the best months to visit TV as far as weather goes.
Don't hesitate to ask TV residents how they like living in TV. Most are very happy to share their experiences with you. Hope you and the kitten have a great time.
