I am not an expert but have had gas for lawnmowers and similar equipment (NJ_ in my garage for years without a problem and know of no one who has had a problme. You can empty the gas cans into your car when you leave for the North, but I would not. I would fill the golf cart to the top to minimize fumes. Defenitely keep the gas cap on. Same for your gas cans. You might be able to stop by one of the fire stations and ask their advice.
