Haaa, get mongoose or monitor lizard, it not a big deal they are harmless.
U can put soft aluminum around the tree about 24" high, they can't grip it to to up.
U can also paint it to match the bark color.
One other point about the garage is if it faces south and is warm, they will be attracted to it, where in a north facing garage it is less likely, but that just an opinion from a solar thinking person.
