Most likely this is a result of improper installation. Our lanai will be getting very hot during the summer months and we will not be here to monitor - has anyone else had or seen this problem?

Some tiles do get slippery when wet as does some paint. I have neither problem. In the event you elect to go with either make your selection carefully.
I agree improper installation could cause cracking. However, proper preparation is as important. If it is a DYI job make sure to get proper instruction. If you contract it I would advise getting referrals from the Warranty Department. The lowest bid is not necessarily the one to go with.
