Golf Car Often Vehicle of Choice
The Villages’ design as a self-contained retirement community with complete golf cart access has many Villagers participating in activities all week long without using their automobiles for days at a time. Golf carts are not just convenient and practical - Villagers are enjoying the ride. In a recent survey, the average is about 1.1 golf carts per household so there are conservatively about 50,000 golf carts in operation in The Villages. An old, used golf cart might be obtained for around $1000, while an exotic tricked out new designer golf cart could cost over $18,000. Villagers’ desire for that perfect ride has spawned a cottage industry with literally dozens of golf carts dealers, resellers, suppliers, maintenance shops and modifiers. The convenience of a golf cart is matched by its affordability in operation. The May issue of The Villages Voice did a gas vs. electric golf cart piece where the average cost of operation of each cart by a typical Villager was about $1 per day.
