I've driven both ways and I prefer going over I-10 to I-75. I would say that going over to 75 is indeed a bit longer, but...301 is a mass of stop lights and varying speed limits. I don't know if it's one big speed trap, I have no evidence of that, but I find it maddening with all of the local traffic to deal with. I prefer to keep moving between 70-80mph and you're never going to be able to do that on 301.
