Very interesting question. I've seen lots of things in the sky I couldn't identify, which I guess qualify as UFO's. But I'm a big believer in Occam's Razor. So the last thing I would ever assume is little green men. But there is a part of us that wants to believe. Some so strongly that they overcome reality to believe.
I am reminded of the Phoenix lights a few years ago, and really anything where there are lights at night. IF an alien culture came here their trip would likely be in one of three modes. 1.) The are coming to observe, only. 2.) They are friendly and would like to make contact. 3.) They are hostile and would like to attack.
I don't believe in any of these scenarios it would make sense to fly around at night with the lights on. If they were observing they would turn the lights off. If they wanted to make contact they would light up even better and say something. I don't want to think about the third one, but again I don't think they'd light around with their lights one.
I've always found only two plausible ways to look at life on other planets. First, the creation story of Christians and some other religions that this planet was created special and the stars are just stars would mean life only on earth and nowhere else. Or if there is life elsewhere, there would be lots of life elsewhere.
I agree with Gracie, the size of the universe we know about is overwhelming, not to mention what is beyond. I was watching a PBS show the other day about improved telescopes and looking at pictures of tens of thousands of galaxies, each with bilions of stars. Honestly, my mind cannot get hold of this and the unfathomable distances between.
So, like others, I'd be open to aliens, just hope they're friendly and aren't related to the Kardashians.
