BUT...you have to be. You can't trust messages from people you don't know. Or even people you DO know who have been hacked and it appears that the message is coming from them and then it is something entirely different or contains a virus.
You wonder how it can be stopped. I err on the side of caution and often delete emails from someone I don't immediatly recognise.

Gracie, unfortunately you can't stop them. They're like cockroaches. The more you stamp them out, the more they appear. You just have to be careful about any suspicious looking emails. BTW, I doubt the spammer in this case has the email of those they've sent their spam to. There is a way of doing it without having access to the email database. I won't explain how just in case there is an unwelcome lurker that we don't want to give any bright ideas to! I'll send you a message using the method, but don't respond! If I'm a spammer, I will then get your email address!
