It is not the news media's job to verify girl friend stories. There was no reason initially not to believe him. Of course it was the media which did finally investigate, so give them credit. If he is a victim he certainly was extremely complicit in the story including having claimed to have met her and spoken to her repeatedly. His cell phone records would clarify. After Lance Armstrong this week, I suppose we all are very sceptical of the claims of athletes. One alternative explanation circulating is that she, real or imagined, functioned as his beard.
