Accumulations around a foot in capital district. Accumulations of 12 to 18 inches across the catskills...taconics and mid hudson valley as well as western massachusetts and southern vermont. * maximum snowfall rates...snow rates will occasionally exceed one inch per hour tonight and early saturday morning. * timing...snow...heavy at times...mainly this evening. The snow will gradually taper to snow showers by daybreak saturday. * impacts...snow covered roads and reduced visibility... As low as a quarter of a mile...will make for dangerous travel. * winds...northeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph... Gusting to 35 mph across the higher terrain with some blowing drifting. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow... Sleet...and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
