There's a camera that takes a picture of your car for security purposes, including your license plate. If two, three or four cars go through together, the camera won't get all of the license plates. So, if you tailgate, you're taking important information away from security.
As others have said, "stopping also helps to control traffic". But many people have become so quick at flashing their card the gate never comes all the way down. That's bad for someone who's waiting to cross. I live on a side street that is a few feet beyond a gate. So I come to a stop because I have a stop sign. But then I sometimes wait a long long time because there's often no let up of cars comming through the gate. They don't give the same courtesy as they would at a 4 way stop. Should they?
