The first thing we bought in our new home in 2006 was a queen size Murphy bed for the 3rd (guest) bedroom/computer room. Ours was pricey too, about $2000 installed. It is just a large oak laminate cabinet with a pull down bed inside. No box spring.
The second thing we bought was a $85 queen size air bed for the master bedroom. We were still working and only used the new home for about two weeks twice a year. We usually slept on the air bed in the MBR because it was a larger room and we had guests a few times each year that used the Murphy bed. Both the Murphy bed and air bed were comfortable.
The Murphy bed has only been used a few times a year but worth the expense because it is always available if someone wants to stay and you can still use the room for other things when it isn't in use.
