My Ukrainian grandmother came across in steerage as an orphaned 14 year old , traveling alone........on a ship that was practically sinking, as she always told my mom..........it was the last crossing before being put in "mothballs". She "cruised" across the ocean in 1906. Horrific conditions.


Ditto for my Dad's Italians...........all came across in steerage.
It was no picnic back in the 1890 timeframe...........no luxury cruise out of Florida.

We actually own a pleasure boat........but I prefer my feet on the ground.
Short crossings to get to an island are fine with me............but can think of other ways to spend our vacation money..........for sure.
