He also took two French merchant ships and claimed one had been abandoned at sea which he hid in Ocracoke Inlet in NC. Under Maritime Law, he then shared this booty with the NC Chief Justice and Secretary of the Colony Tobias Knight (20 hogsheads of sugar) as well as with NC Governor Charles Eden (60 hogsheads of sugar). Doubt if even some hermit of the Caribbean would see this deal as being honorable; Alexandre Spotswood did not and made plans to send a hunting party of the Royal Navy to kill and/or capture Blackbeard. Another reason why Lt. Governor of VA Alexandre Spotswood was so frightened of Blackbeard and his pirates at Ocracoke Island, NC was the huge week long party many pirate captains had attended starting the last week of September 1718 and going into October at that rural place. Present were Charles Vane, Israel Hands, John Rackham, Robert Deal and Edward Teach (Blackbeard)-- all men who had captained pirate ships. The devils consumed so much kill devil rum and created such a demand for it when word of the bacchanal got out as to probably stamp that name Kill Devil into the history of parts of NC. This did not sooth the savage breast of any pirate for long nor subdue their need for booty. Some of the pirates even started to use the bones of the many wild pigs butchered for this orgy as armor and created various musical instruments from bones to play during this week long pirate celebration. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...nstrument.html http://www.famous-pirates.com/famous.../john-rackham/ http://latinamericanhistory.about.co...arles-Vane.htm
