I really want to share this with my friends at TOTV. Perhaps you read the book by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Nicholas Kristof and his co-author and wife Sheryl WuDunn? (She also won a Pulitzer!)
Or maybe you saw the PBS documentary?
Half the Sky is based on the premise that the oppression of women and girls in the developing world is the human rights issue of our time. If we can unleash their potential, we go a long way towards solving many of the world's problems. I heard Kristof say that if you provide aid to men they often spend it on immediate pleasures like booze and gambling while women are more likely to invest the money for the future of their families.
I have been fortunate to host Kristof for a talk at my University twice and next week I will host him again, but this time with Sheryl WuDunn. I am so excited about this!
If you want to see them, you can do so in the comfort of your own home in the Villages. They will be speaking at the Toronto Public Library on Tuesday, March 7, 2013 at 7p.m. (EST)
