There are 2 right ways you can go and 1 wrong way.

WRONG way...although it is the cheapest the wrong way would be to tap into an existing line in the family room and add additional ducts. You would be robbing cool air from that entire line and not getting enough air into the furthest point...the faimly room.

Right way....have a contractor determine the capacity of your existing unit compared to requirements as determined by a heat/ac survey which takes into consideration. total Square footage under heat/ac, the exposure (ie faces north south east or west), window exposure and type of windows (double pane /low-e, insulated etc.) . If your existing AC/heat unit can handle the additional SQ Footage, a separate flexible duct should be installed directly to the furnace that would provide heat/ac at equal levels compared to the rest of the house.

NOTE::: If your existing system is 10 years old or more you may want to consider upgrading this system NOW for you are past the 1/2 point of its useful life.

RIght way #2....if your existing system is still relatively new and cannot handle the added SF, then you should go with a ductless system that has a separate compresser located near the family room. Mitisubitisi sells a great system call the Mr BIG and it comes in various btu sizes to accomodate different rooms.

I would give Chuck Farrel a call 352-753-9497
