The water here IS SAFE out of the tap. It's a personal choice if you want more filtration.
We opted for a plumber installed Sears Hybrid softener and filter combo. Total was around $ 1000 and it works very well so far.
Rule of thumb is the harder they push the more you are overpaying IMHO.

I called the water dept last week and the lady there told me the water hardness was 8 to 8.5 grains. She told me quite a few installers call the water dept to find out what he hardness is here in the villages.
