Just because it comes from a plant, does that make it a food? Lots of pharmaceuticals come from plants.
If you think sugar isn't addictive, try eliminating it from your diet and see what happens. You won't know how much you need it until you don't have it. And moderation usually means a steady supply in one form or another.

Basically, sugar has been replaced by its evil twin HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP........which is in everything if you read labels. Also, toxic to one's health given the huge amount of it which is consumed.
Best to eliminate as many processed foods, canned foods, frozen prepared foods, etc. as one can and try to cook "fresh" (which I know you do)......
