Default Feeling Guilty

An elderly Italian gentleman who lived on the outskirts of Naples went to confession one day. When the priest slid back the panel in the confessional the old man said: “Bless me Father, for I have sinned. You see Father during the war, a beautiful Jewish woman who lived in our neighborhood knocked desperately on my door one night and asked me to save her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic.”

The priest said: “That was a wonderful thing you did, you have no reason to confess that.” The man said: “There’s more Father, she began repaying me with sexual favors, several times each week, and occasionally twice on Sundays.”

The priest replied, “That was a long time ago, and by taking her in you not only put the two of you in danger, but you ultimately saved her life. It’s understandable that two people, thrust together under those circumstances could quite easily succumb to the pleasures of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, then again I say, you are forgiven.”

“Thank you Father, I must tell you that is a very big weight off my mind. I do have just one more question. Do you think I should tell her that the war is over?”
