I suggest that you call the Auto Registration office for Sumter County and their phone number is 352-689-4645. Even if you don't have a home in Sumter County they can still give you the correct information.
Also since you own a home in The Villages I would call the people that you have your home owners insurance with and ask them about insuring the car which will go along with the registration laws of the state of Florida. Then you might check with your insurance agent in Indiana for the same information.
Florida plates are less money than Indiana or what I remember Indiana plates were before I moved here in 2006.
Also if you do Indiana plates I think you can have Florida police do the title search and then they will fill out a form that you get at the Indiana BMV. You might check on this. The police check is a stolen car check.
I spent 35 years in auto sales and these things change often and are different in every state.
