I am just a wannabee...I live in a fairly safe (but not crime free suburb of Chicago). I do feel safe when visiting The Villages, which is important as a single female. One of the reasons that TV is attractive to me as a future home is the feeling of safeness I get here...sort of like living in Dubuque, IA where I was born and raised. But as Happinow posted, one always needs to be aware of one's surroundings.
