I could be wrong, but what I got from it 50 years ago is that people who seek change are neurotic. I believe he compared modern civilization with primitive tribes that never change. If you're totally content with your life, why would you want to change? So I think it makes sense.

This striving for things to be better and better implies that we're in a mess. So, you have to wonder: Where are we going? Where do we hope to be in the future? Are we getting somewhere or just chasing our tails? And if things do get "better" who will it be better for?


I am totally content with my life, but I am not totally content with how others are having to struggle with their lives, and therein lies my willingness and desire to effect change, and I DO NOT think that makes me neurotic, thank you very much.
